Rabbi Ziera was the Talmudic Rabbi who advocated the additional days religious women wait before being intimate with their husbands. The number of women unable to get pregnant within the parameters of laws governing intimacy due to this arbitrary number of days has resulted in couples who could potentially conceive, but because the woman ovulates early and waits past this time, they never end up having children.
Today, rather than using creative thinking, revisiting the laws and reinterpreting them, the ultra religious establishment has encouraged women (who otherwise could conceive on their own) to take hormones to force their cycles to conform with the man-made laws.
