Displaced II

2024

No one dreamed that that a year after October 7, 2023 families would still be living in tiny hotel rooms. As the war continues and we see daily images of the charred remains of family homes, both in Gaza, Israel,  and Lebanon, it is both embarrassing and with a feeling of guilt that I continue to live in my home here in Jerusalem. In the process of laser cutting, the laser burns the paper and usually the artists want very little burn marks. This can be controlled and as with paper cuts, the laser cuts look hand done. In this project, I wanted burn marks, I wanted the laser cutter to cut the paper to the very point of where it would almost catch on fire. As I placed these homes, these stacks of burned shells, the soot from the burned edges gets all over my hands. It is very, very hard to wash off.
